Peer mentoring is here to help you out with study skills support from fellow students! It’s a way for you to get help or give help to someone who needs it. Study skills support focuses on academic writing, independent revision, sign-posting places where students can get more help, and more.

Things to Know as a Mentor

Your mentee is here to gain skills support. You could work with them on help with improving assignment writing, being able to signpost places for help within the University and Students’ Union, and more. Your mentee will be looking to you for encouragement and study skills support and meeting face to face or online.

It is important to read the resources we have provided on our website for you.

We’d recommend you had a maximum of two mentees, to make sure you can keep providing good support while making time for your own studies. When you have connected with a mentee to support, make sure to take down your advert so that you aren’t still getting messages.

From signing up as a mentor, you can:

  • Log your hours and skills with our volunteering service
  • Development of skills such as confidence, organisation and communication
  • Help your mentee to develop their own approach to academic writing and revision
  • Enhance your CV
  • Get involved in a learning community

Things to Know as a Mentee

Your mentor is here to provide skills support. They will work with you to help your assignment writing improve, be able to sign post other places you could get help from within the University and Students’ Union, and more.

Meeting up with your mentor, face to face or online, is one of the best parts of mentoring. Making sure to set meet ups and sticking to them is key to keeping the relationship helpful.

From signing up as a mentee, you can:

  • Gain confidence in academic skills
  • Become an independent learner
  • Help to develop your own approach to academic writing
  • Get help with acting on assignment feedback
  • Get involved in a learning community

Things a Mentor Can’t Offer

  • Feedback on assignment content for submission
  • Advice on content or subject related issues
  • Advice/counselling on any problems
  • Corrections or changes to an assignment

Although mentors can’t offer these things, they can direct you to places which can. Check out our “Where To Go” article to see what services you can access in the Students’ Union and University.

Benefits of a mentor/mentee that isn’t on your course
Working with someone that isn’t on your course means that you’re focusing on study skills instead of the content of the work – any issues with the content of an assignment can be looked at with tutors and lecturers.
