Student Rep Elections - Frequently Asked Questions

If you have a question about the Rep Election take a look below and simply click on the question to reveal the answer!

Why has the structure changed?

Due to feedback from both staff and students, we have got rid of the Course Rep role and replaced it with two brand new roles for the following reasons:

  • To provide students with more representation
  • To allow more students to take on leadership roles & develop practical skills
  • Increase support for volunteers
  • To create a more streamlined feedback process that is more efficient for all

How do I nominate myself?

Nominations this year are via the VLE:

  • Once there, click on ‘My Modules’
  • Then click on the Students’ Union course box
  • Scroll down and you’ll find all the information you need and also the ‘Nominate Me’ button
  • Click that and you’ll be able to choose which position you’d like to stand for, and have the option to add a statement explaining who you are and why you’d like the role

For a visual explanation, please see the video link: ‘How to Nominate’

What is the difference between the two roles?

Which role you choose depends on how much time you wish to give, and what skills you wish to develop. :

  • The Class Rep role requires a lot less time than the Course Champion role - all you need to do is occasionally ask your class for feedback and then hand it over to your Course Champion – either as a written document, or by going attending a Rep Forum (there are only 3 of these a year).
  • As a Class Rep you could develop skills in:
    • Report writing
    • Leadership
    • Organisation
    • Confidence

  • However, as a Course Champion, you don’t need to collect feedback yourself, but you do need to make sure you receive it from the Class Reps. Once you have this feedback, you will then take it to a University meeting (SSLCs - there are 3 of these a year) where you will advocate alongside the Vice President for positive change.
  • As a Course Champion, you could develop skills in:
    • Leadership
    • Campaigning
    • Dealing with Stakeholders
    • Collaboration
    • Persuasion
    • Confidence

If you’re still not sure which role is best for you, then contact your Students’ Union Coordinator at i.miller@angliastudent.com

How many hours would I have to commit?

Both roles are extremely flexible and it is up to you when you’d like to work on them and how you wish to do so.

The roles are also what you make of them – the more you put in, the more you’ll get out, and so we do not advertise the roles on a time-basis.

How long do I have to nominate?

Nominations close at midnight on the 29th January

Do I need to have any experience?

Absolutely none! You will get full training and we love working alongside students who are getting involved like this for the first time.

Can I nominate myself for both roles?

Yes you can! Just bear in mind that if elected into both positions it might mean a little extra work.

What if I change my mind?

If you have nominated yourself and you change your mind, get in touch with us and we will remove you from the candidate list.

What should I write in the text box to get students to vote?

The text box is for you to write something about yourself and why you’re passionate about the role/why you want it etc… you could even refer to previous experiences that make you a perfect person for the role.

Can there be two reps for my class?

Unfortunately not, only one student can be elected per class as Class Rep

Who can vote for me?

  • If you’re running to be a Class Rep, then only those within your class will be able to vote for you.
  • If you’re running to be Course Champion, then only those within your course will be able to vote for you.

How will I know if I have won?

Once voting has closed, we will contact all nominees with the results and the next steps for those that have been successful.

I still have questions, who can I contact?

Please send questions to: i.miller@angliastudent.com and we will respond as quickly as possible.
