Hi, my name is Luca Girardi, I study Marine Biology and I’m the current LGBT+ rep.
Over the last six months I've campaigned for gender neutral toilets in Compass House and across the entire campus, ran successful events for LGBT History Month and provided support for LGBTQ+ students.
As LGBT+ rep I hope to fight to bring to light the issue of abuse in LGBTQ+ relationships and begin to fight for support for those who have suffered at the hands of their partner. I believe this is an important issue, which often goes unspoken, and is much more common in young adults than is realised. I would like to work with the SU and Anglia Ruskin to provide support for students in abusive relationships as well as work with people outside the University to combat this injustice against people in the community.
As LGBT+ rep I would continue the celebration of LGBT+ History Month, and continue to provide educational experiences on the topics of sexuality, gender and sexual health. Furthermore, I hope to continue to provide more exposure for the LGBTQ+ community and the societies which provide great experiences and a safe place for the LGBTQ+ student community. I want to continue being part of the executive committee to help ensure the LGBTQ+ community’s voice continues is always heard by the SU and the people capable of instigating change.
Representing the LGBTQ+ community has been such a rewarding experience and being able to witness and help make changes in the university has given me such amazing memories. I would like to continue to provide support to LGBTQ+ students, whether that be with mental health issues, coming out or simply helping their transition into university life.
