Sustainability

Welcome to the Sustainability Society at ARU Cambridge!

Our mission is to champion sustainability efforts in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), fostering a community passionate about environmental issues. We aim to build partnerships with local businesses and organisations to advance sustainability initiatives while providing opportunities for learning, skill development, and personal growth for students.

Types of Events and Activities:

  • Workshops: Engage in hands-on learning about intersectional sustainability, access to sustainability, and energy-saving habits. Participate in fashion DIY sessions like clothing repair and upscaling, as well as workshops centered around career skills.
  • Item Swaps: Join our regular events to exchange clothes and other items such as books, promoting a circular economy and reducing waste.
  • Charity Collaborations: Collaborate with local charities for fundraising events and eco-friendly pop-up shops, showcasing sustainability-focused products
  • Green Campus Tours: Discover the university’s green infrastructure and sustainable initiatives through guided tours.
  • Tree Planting and Green Space Revitalisation: Partner with local environmental groups for community tree planting days and restore green spaces on and off campus.
  • Environmental Movie Nights: Enjoy screenings of environmental films and documentaries.
  • Biodiversity Monitoring Program: Get hands-on conservation experience through collaboration with local biodiversity monitoring projects.
  • Allotment Collaboration: Work with local allotments to grow fresh produce and herbs, learning about sustainable agriculture.

Membership is free because we believe that sustainability should be accessible for everyone! Depending on activity type or workshop, we may have to ask for a small fee but we never want monetary issues to be a deterent for people, so please feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

Join Our Committee! We are currently seeking dedicated committee members to help drive our initiatives forward:

  • Campaign/Events Officer: Organise and promote our events and campaigns.
  • Social Media Officer: Manage our social media presence and engage the community online.
  • Communications/Network Officer: Facilitate communication and networking within the society and with external partners.

Become a Sustainability Ambassador!

We are seeking sustainability ambassadors from all disciplines, courses and societies within the university. Regardless of your field of study, sustainability plays a vital role in shaping a better future, and your unique perspective can contribute significantly to our efforts. If you’re passionate about making a difference and want to help foster a sustainable culture at our university, we encourage you to apply!

Being a sustainability ambassador not only allows you to promote eco-friendly habits and raise awareness of sustainability initiatives across campus, but it also enhances your CV.

If you are a committee member, it counts towards your volunteering hours. We are working on making this applicable for sustainability ambassadors too!
